Yeo Valley Group of four WIs (Kenn, Nailsea, Tickenham and Yatton) had a joint activity recently – indoor kurling at Tickenham Village Hall. There were eight teams with four players, taking it in turns to play the other seven teams.
Looking like the curling seen in the Winter Olympics, but with no ice or brooms required, we all battled it out to see who would be the overall winner. The ‘stones’ run on tiny casters and players aim for a target mat with scores printed on it. Provided your stone is in a target zone (however little) it scores the appropriate amount.
Everyone enjoyed themselves, even though at times their score was zero! It is surprisingly tricky to get your stone to stop where you want it to stop. Stones could be knocked so that a good score was reduced or even knocked off the mat altogether. And not always by the opposition!
The winners were a Yatton team who received a medal each and the trophy. The lowest scoring team were awarded a crème egg “to egg them on to do better next time!”
Thanks were given to the organizer Pat Brown, Secretary of the Yeo Valley Group and to Stockwood WI who brought the equipment, gave instructions and scored for us.
