Tickenham Village Church is decorated at the moment with a very moving display of hand crafted poppies, many contributed by Tickenham WI members. The installation is a tribute to the fallen who have served in wars and conflict since the Great War. The crosses in the photo below are to remember the eighteen servicemen from the village who lost their lives in the two World Wars.
This year there are purple poppies amongst the red, representing the animals who also lost their lives in military service.
A special Service of Remembrance will be held on Sunday 10th November, with wreath laying at the War Memorial in Tickenham Church.
In Flanders' fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders' fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high,
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders' Fields.
